Welcome to MUSKOGEE

Blooms, Birds, and Butterflies

Muskogee’s beautiful Honor Heights Park is soon to welcome a new addition: an interactive butterfly habitat.  The habitat will allow visitors to walk among butterflies as they go about the work of their day: emerging from cocoons, alighting on flowers, floating through the air.  Visitors to the habitat will tour a mesh-enclosed space in which they won’t interfere with the butterflies, but might be lucky enough to have one of the graceful creatures land on a sleeve or an outstretched hand.  Whether or not they are blessed with such good fortune, all habitat visitors will have the chance to learn more about butterflies through educational materials and the observation of the creatures in their natural habitat.

Of course, Honor Heights has long been blessed with a variety of other animals on its grounds.  Birds, squirrels, and other woodland creatures wander throughout the park.  They can best be seen while hiking the park’s famous Devil Steps, which start near the central pond and proceed up to the summit of Veteran’s Hill, rewarding you for your efforts with a breathtaking view of the city of Muskogee.  Along the way, you’ll encounter plenty of gentle wildlife, as well as a beautiful waterfall surrounded by gorgeous plant and flower life.

Speaking of flowers, Muskogee is also known for its springtime Azalea Festival.  Held in April, the Festival celebrates the blooming of the azalea bushes throughout the park.  The park also features a rose garden whose fragrant blooms are at their peak in the spring.  But spring isn’t the only time you can enjoy the azaleas—during the winter holiday season, Honor Heights is home to the Garden of Lights, a captivating celebration not only of Christmas, but of the azalea blooms, whose spring glory is revived in winter by a beautiful portrayal in lights.
